Tips and Secrets
The appreciation of fine cigars, akin to fine wines, is an exceptional form of art. Enjoying a cigar is a sophisticated pastime where each draw offers a unique experience of succulent pleasure. Below are some well-protected secrets to enhance your cigar appreciation. If you have more tips, please email us!
Selecting
The most superior cigar is invaluable—it’s the one you prefer at a distinguished moment, allowing you to relax and savor it. Experienced aficionados base their choice on personal preference and the time available to fully enjoy the cigar’s qualities. Experimenting with Havana brands will help you discover different styles and establish your preferences. For those who smoke multiple Havanas a day, it’s recommended to smoke subsequent cigars of equal or fuller flavor to appreciate each one’s unique strength and taste.
The size, or vitola, of the cigar should match the time you have for its enjoyment, as the true potential of a cigar often reveals itself halfway through. Heavier gauge cigars generally offer fuller, richer flavors due to the thicker girth allowing more tobacco in the filler.
Storage
Proper storage is essential to maintaining the quality of Havanas. They should be kept between 18-20°C and at a relative humidity (RH) of 70-72%. A humidor is the best way to preserve them, ensuring the right level of RH and temperature. Use distilled water to fill the humidifier to avoid mineral dust on your cigars. A properly stored cigar should feel firm but springy when gently squeezed.
Cutting
The way you cut a cigar’s head determines the quality of the draw and the intensity of the cigar’s aroma. Use a guillotine cutter or special cigar scissors to make a clean cut across the shoulders of the cigar, leaving part of the cap intact to prevent the wrapper from unraveling. Avoid piercing the cigar, as it results in a poor draw and focused heat.
Lighting
Take your time and ensure the entire foot of the cigar is evenly lit. Use a wooden match (after the sulfur has burned off) or a butane lighter, avoiding petrol lighters and wax candles due to their interfering aromas. Hold the cigar at a 45-degree angle above the flame, rotating it for an even burn. To re-light a cigar, knock off the ash, burn off accumulated tars, and then take a few vigorous puffs to revive it.
Smoking
Do not inhale the smoke; instead, savor the flavors on your palate. Relax and enjoy the flavors, not rushing the experience. When you’ve had enough, simply lay the cigar to rest in an ashtray; it will self-extinguish without stubbing.
